The head of the Louisiana Office of Juvenile Justice has resigned, the governor's office announced today. It comes as the state has experienced numerous problems with various juvenile lockups.
William Summers submitted his resignation Friday. Curtis Nelson steps in as interim secretary.
Earlier this week, Summers announced that the state's juvenile jails were near capacity and some detainees in for low-level offenses would have to be released in order to make sure more violent offenders remained inside.
Some of the worst offenders in the Bridge City Center for Youth were transferred to a building at the state penitentiary in Angola after multiple escapes and inmate uprisings.
