Turnout for gubernatorial elections in Louisiana usually ranges around 45 to 50 percent, according to the Louisiana Secretary of State's office, but turnout for 2023 may be a good bit lower, according to one Louisiana pollster.

"I had, based on early voting data, projected a 38 to 40 percent total turnout," said John Couvillon of JMC Analytics. "Based on what I'm hearing from people around the state, I'm kind of wondering now if it's going to be in the low to mid 30s."

The lower turnout could benefit Landry, and increase his chances of winning without a runoff.

"Historically, in Louisiana, Democrats have done marginally better amongst early voters than among than amongst election day voters," said Couvillon. "So if you're talking about a low election day turnout, that to me is indicative of even less Democratic enthusiasm than what you had the week of early voting."

And Couvillon says that means down-ballot races will probably favor incumbents.
