Tommy: President Trump's COVID experience

The White House

Nobody in their rational mind would want a sitting president to be sick and in the hospital. If you buy that premise, there are apparently a lot of people on social media who aren’t in their rational minds.

I was disappointed to see how many people actually wanted President Trump to die. The president has proven himself to be arrogant, stubborn, creator of his own reality and more; but a president, ANY president, dying in office can do nothing but hurt the country.

After hearing that POTUS had been diagnosed with COVID-19, I figured his response would go one of two ways. He would either be humbled and emerge as a true leader, encouraging everyone to wear masks and follow all of the CDC guidelines so we could reduce infections as much as possible until a vaccine was available. Or…

He would trivialize the coronavirus even more, using his own recovery as proof that it was no big deal. After removing his mask before entering the White House it's apparent he’s gone the latter, not the former, route. In retrospect, it was probably foolish to even consider using President Trump and humble in the same sentence.

I am not the President of the United States. I neither need nor deserve round the clock Secret Service protection. The stock market doesn’t react to what I say. Donald Trump IS the President of the United States, and as such, commands special treatment, as does any president. That’s why I think any attempt to compare his COVID experience with the average American is disingenuous and dangerous.

If only it were true.

The medicinal cocktail the president was given is neither approved nor available to the general public. The vaccine he said will be “momentarily available” won’t be. I don’t think you should let COVID dominate your life, but I DO think President Trump should have used this opportunity as a teaching moment. He could have acted as a true leader and simply encouraged people to wear a mask so we could get back to normal as quickly as possible. Instead he chose to go the tough guy route and remove his mask before entering the White House, endangering others in the process.

We talked to one of the doctors who came up with the guidelines for developing the monoclonal antibodies the president was given. Listen to what Dr. Lucio Miele had to say about how they work and their availability. Then see if you think his presidential COVID experience can in ANY way be compared to ours.

Oh…one more thing. Most of us don’t have a fully functional ICU in our homes. President Trump does.
