Tommy: What happens if Obamacare is thrown out?

What did most of our grandparents tell us? You better watch what you ask for…because you might just get it? I think that describes the Trump administration’s efforts to have the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, thrown out by the Supreme Court.

Just about everyone I’ve spoken to likes three aspects the ACA:

* Can’t be turned down for pre-existing conditions

* No upper limits on coverage

* Kids are allowed to stay under a parent’s coverage until they're 27 years old

Do you really want those protections to go away? And speaking of protections, I hear a lot about protection against being turned down for pre-existing conditions but virtually NOTHING about upper limits on policies. The former is useless without the latter.

If you’re diagnosed with cancer or suffer a catastrophic injury, you can spend your way through a million dollar cap surprisingly quickly. So then what? You get another policy right? Not so fast my friend. Sure…you can’t be turned down for pre-existing conditions, but the price of that policy is going to be so expensive you’d be better off footing the bill yourself.

Those were among some of the things we discussed with Erin Fuse Brown, Associate Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Law, Health and Society at Georgia State University College of Law. Listen to what she had to say about SCOTUS and the ACA. You may just learn something you didn’t know.
