The National Hurricane Center says we could soon be watching a hurricane in the Caribbean, headed for Central America.
Tropical Storm Eta had maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph on Sunday night at 10:00pm.
"Eta is expected to become a hurricane by early Monday morning," the Hurricane Center advised. "Additional strengthening is likely thereafter, and Eta is expected to be a major hurricane when landfall occurs Monday night or early Tuesday."
This is the first time we have gone this far into the Greek alphabet after running out of storm names. Eta is the 28th named storm of the 2020 Hurricane Season. In 2005 there were 27 named storms, but the Hurricane Center later classified a 28th storm that had hit the Canary Islands.
"On the forecast track, the center of Eta is expected to approach the northeastern coast of Nicaragua Monday afternoon, and make landfall within the Hurricane Warning area in Nicaragua Monday night or early Tuesday."
Forecaster expect the center of Eta to move across Nicaragua through early Wednesday and then into Honduras as a depression.
Some models show what is left of the system moving back over water next weekend, but the Hurricane Center forecast only goes through Friday.
