Manhattan prosecutors investigating the Trump Organization do not plan to charge the former president with any criminal charges at this time, according to Donald Trump’s personal attorney.
Trump lawyers met with Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance’s office again Monday. Attorney Ron Fischetti told the Associated Press a grand jury was close to voting on an indictment. The investigation into Trump has lasted more than two years.
Fischetti said the D.A.’s office informed them it would not charge former President Donald Trump himself in any potential charges coming this week. The D.A. did not, however, rule out the possibility of charges altogether.
“There is no indictment coming down this week against the former president,” Fischetti said in a telephone interview with NBC New York. “I can’t say he’s out of the woods yet completely.”
The Manhattan District Attorney’s office declined to comment. Investigators have scrutinized Trump's business practices that provided top executives with vehicles, leased properties, and private school tuition payments. Fischetti said he believes the charges coming this week or next will target employees who did not pay taxes on those company benefits.
“It’s like the Shakespeare play Much Ado About Nothing,” Fischetti told POLITICO. “This is so small that I can’t believe I’m going to have to try a case like this.”
Attorneys for former president Trump had also met with prosecutors last week virtually. Afterward, Fischetti called the possibility of charges “completely outrageous.”
