The National Hurricane Center is using strong language to urge people in Louisiana and Texas to get ready for a potential hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico.
The agency has released a Special Tropical Weather Outlook even before any actual tropical system has formed.
"This system could bring dangerous impacts from storm surge, wind, and heavy rainfall to portions of the coasts of Louisiana, Texas, and the Mexican state of Tamaulipas late this weekend and early next week."
The problem is that without a center of circulation yet, computer forecast models can't determine where it will go just yet.
"An Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system later today."
Forecasters hope the Hurricane Hunters can find a closed circulation, so they can start to get a better idea of where it will hit.
"Uncertainty remains large since the system has yet to form. Interests in these areas should closely monitor the progress of this system and ensure they have their hurricane plan in place."
Models show that while the system has yet to form, it could be a major hurricane in the Gulf by Sunday, with landfall as early as Sunday night.
WWL TV Meteorologist Payton Malone says the further the center forms to the north, toward Cuba, the higher the chances it will impact Louisiana. He says if it former closer to Mexico, it will more likely head for Texas.
Formation chance is now 90%.
