The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Sam is spinning in the Atlantic Ocean. It is forecast to get very strong.
"Rapid intensification is forecast to continue, and Sam is likely to become a major hurricane tonight or early Saturday," the NHC advise.
The forecast calls for Sam to become a category four hurricane with top sustained winds of 130mph.
Sam is not a threat to the Gulf of Mexico.
"The hurricane will likely turn northwestward as it approaches the northern Leeward Islands."
WWL TV Meteorologist Payton Malone says Hurricane Sam may threaten Bermuda, but is not expected to endanger any other land.
"We do not expect it to get into the Gulf of Mexico."
Malone advises, however, East Coast residents to keep an eye on Sam in case anything changes.
"Sam is an impressive storm," he noted. "Looks like it will probably be steered more out into the Atlantic."
There is nothing else right now that would threaten the Gulf of Mexico for at least the next week.
