As Mindy moves on, new disturbance gets attention in Caribbean

Tropical weather

Tropical Depression Mindy is already off the Georgia coast after developing into a tropical storm yesterday south of the Florida panhandle. But a new disturbance in the Caribbean has a low chance of development as it moves toward the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center describes it as an area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. It is forecast to drift over Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico before emerging over the Bay of Campeche where it has a 30 percent chance of development through the next five days.

"That'll bring us some rain starting Sunday," said WWL-TV meteorologist Payton Malone. "Looks like the rain will be around throughout much of next week with that tropical wave."

He said some forecast models predict development before it moves over Texas.

The hurricane center is also watching a tropical wave expected to move off the west coast of Africa by Saturday. It could become a tropical depression near the Cape Verde islands next week.
