Get ready for a sudden drop in temperatures, as we will go from the low-70s to the 20s in less than 24 hours.
All of Southeast Louisiana is under an extreme cold warning until noon on Tuesday. According to the National Weather Service, some parts of the area could experience wind chills as low as six degrees.
" . . . (F)rostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures," the weather service's warning bulletin explained. "An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes."
For these reasons, NWS officials urge local residents to protect their pets, their plants, their pipes, and themselves from the extreme cold temperatures that will reach the region late in the day Sunday. If you've not already taken precautions, time to do so is running out quickly.
Another round of showers and a few storms will usher in the cold front, with temperatures starting to dip late Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening. High temperatures will struggle to reach the 40-degree mark on Monday before reaching the mid-40s on Tuesday. Overnight lows will remain in the 20s through Tuesday before finally touching the mid-30s later in the week.
The good news is that we will have a good bit of sunshing during the week. However, the clouds return on Thursday, as temperatures begin to dip ahead of next weekend.
