Periods of rain today as storms move across the region

Showers and thunderstorms have been raking across the South with heavy rain and hail. Parts of Texas saw balls of ice the size of baseballs.

The worst of the weather has been staying to our north, for the most part.

"A few strong storms remain possible with gusty winds, a spin up tornado or two and hail. Luckily the storms are moving, but the strongest of storms do have the potential to dump very heavy rain in a short amount of time," WWL TV Meteorologist Payton Malone explained. "Most don't see flooding, but a few spots could see 2-4 inches."

He forecasts that by this evening, all of the rain will have pushed east of Louisiana.

"It will be replaced by less humid air going into Friday. So kicking off Jazz Fest the weather will be decent with sunshine and low 80s."

He says Saturday could see another storm system.

"The big question remains who sees the rain. Some guidance suggest most of the rain stays in the Gulf, while other guidance brings more rain over the local areas. With the uncertainty in the forecast this weekend I wouldn't cancel Saturday plans just yet."

By Sunday the nicer weather returns.
