Although conditions appeared unfavorable for development, hurricane hunter aircraft exploring Tropical Depression Two found that it had reached wind speeds consistet with a tropical storm. As such, the National Hurricane Center designated it Tropical Storm Arlene this afternoon, the first named storm on the second day of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season.
Arlene is moving south and the hurricane center expects it to weaken to a depression within 12 hours.
