Hurricane center tracking wave with potential to develop in Caribbean

Hurricane Fiona is this season's first major hurricane, and Tropical Storm Gaston formed this afternoon in the north-central Atlantic.

Neither system is a threat to the North American mainland, but a third weather system is moving toward the confines of the Caribbean Sea.

"The tropical wave located several hundred miles east of the Windward Islands has become better organized this morning," said Hurricane Specialist Lisa Bucci with the National Hurricane Center. "Additional development is expected, and a tropical depression is likely to form within the next few days as the system moves westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph across the eastern and central Caribbean Sea."

"A lot of things we just can't pinpoint this far out. This system hasn't even developed," said WWL-TV meteorologist Payton Malone. "In the long term, definitely something folks along the Gulf Coast region, Florida, Cuba want to be watching."
