The National Hurricane Center is watching a pair of areas for possible tropical development.
Shower and thunderstorm activity associated with a tropical wave over the central tropical Atlantic continues to become better organized.
The NHC says, "Environmental conditions appear conducive for further development, and a tropical depression is likely to form during the early to the middle part of this week."
This system is forecast to move across the southeastern Caribbean Sea on Wednesday and Thursday.
Formation chance through 5 days is high at 70 percent.
WWL TV Meteorologist Michelle Morgan says, "Intensity models show that this area could be the first hurricane of the season. We'll have to wait and see but it'll continue its westerly movement over the Atlantic."
Meanwhile an area closer to home has a low chance of development.
"An area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms extending from southeastern Louisiana across the northeastern Gulf of Mexico and the southern part of the Florida peninsula is associated with a trough of low pressure," the Hurricane Center advised.
Development of this system is expected to be slow to occur as it drifts westward.
Formation chance through 5 days is low at 20 percent.
"Long-range models show that it could be a weak system as it approaches the Texas coast," Morgan said.
