Hurricane Iota is threatening the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua with 160 mile an hour winds, in an area hit by powerful Hurricane Eta two weeks ago. The storm is presenting a fearsome image on weather satellites.
"Iota has a powerful appearance on the latest satellite imagery, with a well-defined eye and solid eyewall," said Senior Hurricane Specialist Eric Blake with the National Hurricane Center. "Little change in intensity is expected before landfall this evening."
The hurricane is forecast to deliver 30 inches of rain to northeastern Nicaragua, which could cause catastrophic flooding. The forecast has the storm making landfall in nearly the exact same spot as Category 4 Hurricane Eta.
