HAMMOND, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - One person was killed and two were critically injured in a crash involving three semis and a small SUV that shut down eastbound 80-94 in Hammond for hours Thursday afternoon.
State Police said the preliminary investigation determined that a semi was slowing in traffic. There was a Kia Sorrento behind the truck. Another semi, traveling at “a high rate of speed,” according to police, slammed into the Kia, pushing the SUV under the first truck.
Another semi was also rear-ended.
A passenger in the Kia was dead at the scene. The driver and another passenger, a child, had life-threatening injuries.
Seeing the wreckage, it’s a wonder that anyone survived.
Debris from the crash was scattered over all lanes. It happened at the Columbia Avenue overpass.
