(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An alligator was captured in the front yard of a home in Decatur, and local officials have no idea where it came from.
The animal was spotted Wednesday in the yard of an 87-year-old woman who was watering her flowers. She reportedly thought it was a snake, WCIA-TV reported.
It was not. The 3 ½-foot-long reptile was captured by wardens from the Macon County Animal Control and Care Center and handed off to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
“It is unclear how the animal, who is not native to this area, came to be where it was,” the animal control agency said in a news release.
The alligator appeared to be in good condition, officials said.
