(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Peoria police have a mystery on their hands.
It started with a call for firefighters to check out a boat anchored in the Illinois River off Peoria’s Riverplex facility Wednesday evening.
A foul odor had been noticed by officers with the Fon du Lac Park District Police Department, which patrols the river.
Peoria firefighters took a boat out there and boarded the 32-foot cabin cruiser. They found what police described as seven young “emaciated” dogs in kennels.
One was dead.
There were no people on board.
The surviving dogs were taken to the Peoria Animal Welfare Shelter.
Police continue to investigate.
