(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The police chief in the Northwest Indiana town of St. John said officers swarmed a high school Wednesday thinking there was an active shooter incident, but fortunately that wasn't the case.

The was a 9-1-1 call, then a lockdown at Lake Central High School.

St. John Police Chief Steve Flores said a student in a rest room heard what apparently sounded like someone with a gun.

"He'd heard what he thought was like a gun being chambered. What that means to him, I'm not sure," Flores said.

Police from local jurisdictions and federal agents responded. Authorities searched the school from room to room and no gun was found, Flores said.

"We were all going there, thinking people were getting shot, and that wasn't the case," he said.

"But absolutely, if kids see something wrong, they need to report it — whether it's to us or the school administration immediately."

Flores says no one's been charged.
