Scammers are dialing up a new fraud, and they're literally phoning it in. Jordan Wright with the Better Business Bureau’s Tip-Off to the Rip-Off® on WBBM Newsradio has the details.
Scammers are bringing back an old-school tactic: the phone call. They're contacting people and claiming their phone number is under investigation, then threatening legal action if they don't cooperate.
These government impersonators pretend to be from the FTC or another agency, saying criminal activity has been linked to your phone number. The goal is to scare you into acting fast.
They may tell you to click a link, respond to a text, or call a special hotline. From there, they're after your personal information and money.
If you get one of these calls, hang up. Never share sensitive information with a stranger, and contact the agency directly if you're concerned.
