Bolingbrook police officer shot while confronting suspect

BOLINGBROOK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Bolingbrook police officer was shot and hospitalized Sunday night.

Officers were called to a business on the 100 Block of S. Bolingbrook Drive just after 6 p.m. for a reported theft, but the suspect had fled the scene.

Less than two hours later, police were called back for reports that the same suspect had fired shots at the business.

An officer was able to track down the suspect, 24-year-old Victor Zarate, to his home on W. Briarcliff Road.

“Upon the officer making contact with the individual, the offender fired multiple shots at the officer, striking him twice,” said Bolingbrook Police Chief Mike Rompa. “The officer was taken to an area hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.”

Officials said Zarate then barricaded himself inside the residence.
After an hours-long standoff with police, he was later taken into custody.

The Bolingbrook Police Department is now working with the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office to file charges.
