(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- If you’re looking to swim laps or take a plunge at a public pool in Chicago, you may want to hurry up.

The Chicago Park District is temporarily closing indoor pools on Saturday Aug. 5, followed by the seasonal closure of outdoor pools later in August, as officials allocate a limited number of lifeguards across the city.

The outdoor pools will remain open until Aug. 20, while the city’s 22 beaches and three neighborhood pools will close Sept. 4. Water spray features will shut off on Sept. 30, officials said in a news release.

“Hundreds of seasonal lifeguards are students that head back to school soon, and it’s important that we balance the needs of our residents and young workforce to keep as many public pools open through the end of summer,” Chicago Park District CEO and Superintendent Rosa Escareñ said. “In addition to our 26-miles of lakefront, ensuring access to three high-capacity outdoor neighborhood swimming pools through the end of summer will be vital to our goal of keeping everyone cool and safe this summer.”

Indoor Chicago pools are slated to reopen Sept. 5, officials said.
