CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois is one of only a few states that bans air fresheners, rosaries, dice or anything dangling from the rearview mirror of a car — supposedly because it can obstruct a driver’s vision.
Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias and Chicago State Rep. La Shawn Ford, though, said it’s not really about public safety at all.
“People in Illinois and across the country have noticed that this outdated law is … racially profiling people while driving,” he said.
Ford said the law has often been used as an excuse to pull people over. Giannoulias and Ford have proposed legislation to change that.
“This bill I’ve negotiated with law enforcement — and law enforcement all have agreed to not oppose this,” said Ford.
He said it will keep police and motorists safer.
