CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago gets festive today, with the downtown skating rinks opening and the holiday tree lighting ceremony taking place in Millennium Park.

“We officially kick off the city’s holiday season with the lighting of the 109th Annual City of Chicago Christmas Tree…There’s so much going on, and starting today we actually got the holiday art market, which features more than 30 local artisans, so you can get your holiday shopping early,” said  Anne Hickey, Deputy Commissioner of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

“We always say it’s wonderful to come and kind of start your holiday traditions her in Millenium Park…Look at the City of Chicago’s tree, get some ice skating, you’ve got Cloud Gate and the City of Chicago’s skyline at your backdrop…You can go see a play, you can go do some shopping, you can go to the Macy’s windows, Christkindlmarket,” Hickey added.

We also ran into Dreezy Claus here, Chicago’s colorful black Santa.

“It is basically my Super Bowl. I love it. I love the energy. I love what it means for the families, for the kids,” he said.

When Dreezy isn’t being Dreezy, he works in childhood behavior intervention as Andre Russell.
