(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Next month, a new international comedy festival will debut in Chicago.

More than 170 comics as well as sketch and improv groups, many of them from outside the U.S., are scheduled to perform at the World Comedy Expo from March 25-27.

Business manager Kerry Sheehan said for many of the comics, the festival will be their first opportunity to perform before live audiences since the start of the COVID pandemic.

“Comedians not only thrive on presenting in front of a live audience, but they really need it to hone their craft and really demonstrate new material, see how it runs,” she said.

The festival will stage performances at five separate venues with strict COVID safety protocols.

Sheehan says performers and staff must be fully vaccinated, and only people who can show proof of either COVID vaccinations or a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before a performance can attend.
