DES PLAINES (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Des Plaines is expected to join the growing list of suburban communities installing license plate reading cameras.

The City Council will consider a two-year contract with the Atlanta-based Flock Group for ten cameras that would be installed on major streets at a cost of about $60,000 dollars.

The cameras record the plates of every passing car. If a car has been reported stolen or used in a crime, the camera system will alert police.
The information is also shared with other departments.

Cameras installed along the Chicago expressways have allowed police to track and recover stolen vehicles, identify witnesses to shootings and, in one recent incident, they were instrumental in getting guns off the streets that were in the trunk of a car that had been stolen.

There are detractors with privacy concerns.
