ELGIN (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A dog is dead and its owners are hospitalized after police in Elgin say it turned on them Thursday.

The couple was walking their dog shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday night when neighbors said it got angry at another dog  and then began attacking its owners. Neighbors called the police and, by the time officers arrived, the dog had clamped its jaws onto the woman’s arm.

Mark Freshour told CBS Chicago what he saw.

"The officer pulled the gun and shot the dog," said Freshour. "It was no way to get that dog to turn loose. It was clamped on so hard, they were trying for five minutes to get the dog off."

With the attack finally over, neighbors said police were able to tend to the woman by applying a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. Police said both were taken to the hospital in serious condition.
