Charges have been filed in the case of a pre-school aged boy who accidentally shot to death his own mother in the south suburbs.

According to activist and Dolton trustee Andrew Holmes, 23 year-old Romell Watson was arrested and admitted the gun used to kill his son’s mother Saturday was his. Town officials said Watson was legally entitled to own a gun but had been transporting it in a car in an unsafe way. He’s charged with a misdemeanor.

Over the weekend, Holmes said 22-year old Deajah Bennett had just put her three-year old son in her car’s backseat after grocery shopping at the Food 4 Less on Sibley Boulevard when the boy found his father’s gun and it went off a bullet hitting his mother in the back. She later died.

The day after Bennett was killed, Andrew Holmes went to that grocery store parking lot and said he handed out 300 gun locks.
