CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Jan Rogers Kniffen, CEO of J. Rogers Kniffen Worldwide told the WBBM Noon Business Hour that retailers are sitting on excess inventory in the final days before Christmas.

"People did a lot of their shopping in October, and then we saw some slowdown in November and some pickup in Cyber Week," Kniffen said.

With only days before Christmas, shoppers are in an unusual position, he said.

"We're at the point where normally you wouldn't be getting a deal, but you can get a deal out in the stores today and the merchandise is still there," Kniffen said.

He said this holiday shopping season is resembling the pre-pandemic holiday season of 2019.

Last-minute shoppers can take advantage of discounts on big names.

"If you want to go buy Nike at a deal, they are really marking it down because their inventory is still up 43% year over year,” Kniffen said. “That's just a good example.”

The window for at home online delivery has closed. Kniffen adds you'll have to either take advantage of in store pickup or hit the malls with the other last minute shoppers.
