(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A cook in a Pilsen food truck was shot while working the grill last week, and his friend and business partner is trying to help him make a full recovery.

Jonathan Lopez had just gotten back in the taco truck that was parked near 18th and Blue Island when, John Campen says, they heard a pop early Friday. His friend was hit in the stomach by a stray bullet.

“He immediately turned and walked off the truck,” Campen says.

Since undergoing surgery, Lopez has been up and down. Campen says the 39-year-old is out of intensive care but has been battling a fever.

Campen set up a Go Fund Me to pay for Lopez’s medical and other bills as he recovers.

Campen says the business partners have been renting a taco truck while trying to perfect a Chicago-style brisket in the hopes of buying their own someday.
