Four people killed when SUV hit by freight train in Harvey

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Four people were killed early Wednesday morning in Harvey when the vehicle they were riding in was hit by a freight train.

At about 2 a.m. at 155th and Halsted streets, someone flagged down a police officer and said an SUV was on fire.

The vehicle had been hit by a CSX freight train after it appeared the driver tried to beat the train, according to a fire official.

But that may never be determined since none of the occupants in the Dodge Durango survived the crash.

Jason Baumann, the director of communications for Harvey, said the SUV was taken to the police station with the victims inside.

“Everybody is here doing all their investigations. I know the train company was already on scene since early this morning. Police concluded their investigations as of right now at the train tracks. So, right now, the investigation continues at Harvey Police Department,” Baumann said.

A crossing gate at the scene was broken and it’s unclear whether the SUV hit the gate or it was already broken when the crash occurred.
