(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 6-year-old Oswego girl found a lucky penny and turned luck into generosity.
“She found this penny in the parking lot. And on our way out after she had a therapy session, she was looking at the penny and actually looked up at me and said, ‘Do you know what I’m thinking?’”
Phyllis Pedone, the grandmother of 6-year-old Laila Huffman, said she replied, “No, I don’t know what you’re thinking.”
“And she said, ‘I think I need to give this to someone here.”
“Here” was Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, where Laila has had speech therapy since 2020.
Not only did she give the hospital that penny, but about $25 she’d saved.
Susan Brady, the vice president of Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital, said Laila’s donation touched her heart.
“It really is kind of a special thing to think about — something so mature coming from such a young person.”
The money is going into a fund to buy books and toys at Marianjoy.
