The city began clearing a homeless encampment in Logan Square on Thursday to make way for construction of a long-planned public plaza project. The public plaza will be at 2550 N. Milwaukee Avenue near the Logan Square monument.

Residents of the encampment were required to leave as crews prepared the site. BLOCK CLUB CHICAGO reports most of the people living on and near the plaza construction site have left.

Some of the remaining homeless people are getting help from 35th Ward staff who will bring their belongings to a nearby church.

Some people living at the Logan Square encampment say they are choosing not to move into city-run shelters because of safety reasons.

The encampment has been the subject of an ongoing debate, with neighbors highlighting concerns about safety and sanitation while advocates argue that clearing camps without stable housing solutions only displaces vulnerable people.
