Andy Chanley has had a crush on WXRT since he was a teenager in Indiana. On road trips to Chicago, it’s the first time he hears artists like R.E.M. and Big Star on the radio. It’s the only station he wants to listen to because, to him, it represents the absolute best in modern rock. And one day, he’ll be a part of it – it’ll just take 35 years to get there.
The story, in less than 100 words, is that Andy bails on engineering school after two years because he finds his true passion is telling stories. He tells stories while running the newsroom at Purdue’s newspaper. Then he tells those stories on the local rock radio station. That leads to mornings on X-103 in Indianapolis, then on to bigger stages in Los Angeles at Y-107, Channel 103.1, and 100.3 The Sound. Most recently, Andy was telling stories as Music Director and Afternoon Drive host at KCSN, the L.A. public radio station voted Station of the Year in 2022 and 2023 by its peers across America. Gosh, was that more than 100 words?
Over those years, Andy’s interviewed hundreds of artists – an alphabet of musicians from Tori Amos, James Brown, Johnny Cash… all the way to Neil Young and Warren Zevon. And now, he also gets to bring their stories back home to where he fell in love with their music in the first place.
Besides radio, Andy’s lent his voice to lots of TV and radio commercials, several video game characters, and yeah, that’s him narrating the old-timey newsreel in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. He’s very happily married with two children, two cats and a turntable.
