The opening of a new memorial in the nation’s capital this weekend isn’t the only honor for some local veterans.
“With today’s announcement, the years of service represented by the veterans that we’re honoring will cover a 50-year span.”
Honor Flight Chicago President John Ptak making that announcement here at Navy Pier: the nonprofit will now accept area Desert Shield and Desert Storm veterans on its flights to Washington DC to visit a new memorial being unveiled this weekend.
“It will stand in tribute to the 600,000 American veterans who between 1990 and 1991, risked their lives to preserve freedom liberating Kuwait from Iraqi occupation.”

“I’m very, very excited that you have a place to now call your own. Go there, reflect, heal and think about what an important time it was.”
Honor Flight Chicago is also in line to fly its 13 thousandth veteran during a Day of Honor next year.
Desert Storm and other eligible veterans are now being encouraged to apply for their Day of Honor to Washington DC online at honor flight chicago dot org.
