(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Illinois Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) locations now allow drivers to pay for services with their phones.

The introduction of contactless payment is the start of an effort to accommodate the move from physical to digital payment and services, according to officials with the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office.

Officials said the change will take effect inside all 150 DMV facilities throughout Illinois, which will accept Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. They've also been equipped with new credit card readers to accept tap-to-pay cards.

In a press release, officials said tap-to-pay or contactless payment systems are more secure than the traditional use of a credit card with a magnetic strip or chip. Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said the new system “leaves no room for fraudsters to steal information.”

The Secretary of State's Office said it's set to roll out digital driver's licenses and IDs next year.
