
(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A new report indicates Illinois utilities lead the nation in the number of gas and electric shutoffs of customers.
The “Powerless in the United States” report puts ComEd’s parent company, Exelon, at the top of the reports “Hall of Shame Utilities” disconnecting utility service to 743,000 homes and businesses between 2020 and 2022 in Illinois, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C.
Nicor had 38% more cutoffs of service between 2021 and 2022….People’s Gas…a nearly 15% increase.
"No magic bullets here...we are in the midst of an affordability issue, particularly when it comes to heat and I think it’s incumbent on all policymakers here to find solutions to it," said David Kolata of the Citizens Utility Board.
The report was written by the Energy and Policy Institute, the Center for Biological Diversity and BailoutWatch.
