(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Illinois Tollway drivers may soon be trading out those hard plastic I-PASS transponders for something newer.

You’ll still need to pay tolls, but you could have a sticker replace the plastic transponder velcroed to your windshield. Tollway board members briefly discussed a change at their August meeting, saying the stickers are significantly cheaper and could begin rolling out early next year.

The Daily Herald reported it’s likely to come up at Thursday’s meeting and drivers in Orange County, California started using them in 2019.

One downside is drivers will not be able to remove them and put them in other cars without breaking the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology embedded in them.
