(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Indiana State Police are investigating a deadly crash that occurred early Wednesday morning on I-80/94.

The crash happened shortly after 1 a.m. just over the border on the Indiana side.

Police say a Jeep Grand Cherokee was westbound when, for an unknown reason, it hit an attenuator – the devices that take the impact of a crash – at the Calumet Avenue exit.

The Jeep came to a stop facing the wrong direction in the right lane.Police say it was then hit by a semi-tractor-trailer.

It was initially thought it may have been a wrong-way crash.

The driver, who was the only occupant of the Jeep, was declared dead at the scene. The driver’s name has not been released yet.

The driver of the truck was not injured.
