CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A police shootout spanning multiple blocks ended Sunday with a burglary suspect dead and a shaken West Side community.
The call to 911 came in as a burglary in progress at 18th and Central Park, in the North Lawndale neighborhood just before 11 a.m.
When officers arrived, police said the suspect took off, leading them on a foot chase across several blocks. Police said the suspect fired first, and they shot back.
Some neighbors told CBS News Chicago it sounded like a war zone.
“It’s usually a really nice block…Really, nothing ever happens on it, so for us to come out the door and see the stuff that we saw today, it was unbelievable,” said Mustafa Hayes who lives nearby.
Police said officers provided aid, but the suspect later died at the hospital. A weapon was recovered.
Investigators said they are reviewing body camera footage and street cameras to piece together what happened.
