CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A man killed in a hit and run in West Lawn over the weekend was a Chicago Public Schools teacher.
Charlie Mills was a special education classroom assistant at Jones College Prep and his passion for theater was evident in the sets he built for school plays.
Former student Astarte Howell told CBS-2 everyone at the school knew the 56-year-old, and he did not deserve to die alone.
"Charlie built a community," Howell said. "He was a pivotal part of Jones College Prep."
Chicago police are looking for a red Toyota Camry that witnesses said was speeding at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday when it hit Mills as he was crossing Pulaski near 64th Street.
Police said the driver never stopped and Mills died at the scene.
