HAMPSHIRE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Kane County Sheriff’s deputy is in critical condition following a head-on crash with a pickup truck on a far west suburban road.

According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Department, the accident occurred shortly before 7 a.m. on Illinois Route 47, just south of Plank Road in Hampshire Township. A Dually Dodge Ram pickup truck carrying a loaded trailer was traveling northbound on Route 47 and trying to stop in traffic, when it swerved into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a Kane County Sheriff’s squad car.

The on-duty deputy, 33-year-old Brian Anderson, sustained multiple leg fractures and was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in critical but stable condition. Anderson has been with the Kane County Sheriff’s for nearly a year and prior to that served as a police officer in Arlington Heights for several years.

Three people were inside the pickup, the sheriff’s office noted. All three were transported to Ascension St. Joseph’s Hospital. The driver had non-life-threatening injuries, while it is unknown conditions of the occupants.

Illinois State Police are investigating the crash and trying to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
