(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Nearly three dozen grocery stores in Chicago would get new names as part of an ongoing merger between national grocery chains Kroger and Albertsons.
Over a decade ago, dozens of old Dominick's locations rebranded as Mariano’s.
If the $24.6 billion merger between grocery chains Kroger and Albertsons goes through, then dozens of Mariano’s locations will have a new name.
The combined company announced it is spinning off nearly 600 stores nationwide in order to get the merger over the finish line.
In Chicago, that means Kroger and Albertsons would sell 31 Mariano’s stores and four Jewel-Osco locations to C&S Wholesale Grocers, which operates the Piggly Wiggly supermarket chain. There’s been no word on what the new name would be for the impacted locations.
A statement from the companies said operations will continue under their current names until the merger is complete. Opponents of the merger will continue to fight the merger in court.
