CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lightfoot says COVID-19 cases are steadily rising in the city, and she has threatened a return to restrictions if things get worse.
“Unvaccinated folks, I’m talking to you,” the mayor said Tuesday.
Mayor Lightfoot says there are too many unvaccinated people in Englewood - ZIP code 60621 — and on the Far South Side, 60633.
Just a few weeks ago, Chicago had 34 new cases of novel coronavirus per day. Now, it’s 80 cases.
The test “positivity” rate has gone from .4 percent to 1.5 percent.
“If we allow the virus to linger here in Chicago,” Lightfoot said, “we will likely see further mutation, some of which our current vaccines may not be able to protect against, and have to reinforce some of the restrictions that have come to infamously define much of 2020 and part of 2021.”
With Lollapalooza set to open next week, the mayor was asked if she regrets giving it the go-ahead weeks ago.
She says no, but she is sounding the alarm now because of the uptick in cases.
