(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Mundelein man went to the White House last week and took a knee — not in protest, but in love.

It all started when Mike Sayre wrote President Biden and asked if he could meet with him to talk about the high cost of child care, when the president came to McHenry County College over the summer.

They met. Sayre’s thank-you note prompted an invitation from the White House for a special holiday tour for his family.

“And when I RSVP’d to the event, I asked the staff, I said, ‘Hey, I was hoping to propose to my girlfriend over Christmas break. But it’d be really cool if I could do it at the White House.’”

And the staff was on board.

Sayre says he was slightly nervous and “freaking out” the whole week leading up to the visit, even though he was 99.9% sure his girlfriend Jennifer Jafari would say yes.

“And she did.”

She accepted in the State Dining Room.
