It was a deadly weekend for birds in Chicago.
Annette Prince, director of Chicago Bird Collision Monitors, told WBBM, "we have been having high numbers ever since...last week...going into Saturday and Sunday...the combined for more than a thousand birds dead and injured that we recovered downtown and throughout the Chicago area."
Prince says, "it's the time of year that's peak migration where birds up north are trying to get to their wintering grounds and the results were thousands of birds downtown that we tried to recover."
Prince, and others, are pushing for an ordinance to establish bird-safe standards for qualifying new construction in Chicago, with Prince saying "these birds are making epic journeys, they're traveling from as far north as northern Alaska and Canada. We're trying to get an ordinance in Chicago that says at least new buildings won't add to the hazard."
