Health officials urge people to sign up for V-Safe Health Checker, a federal online tool to improve COVID vaccination safety

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- After people get COVID-19 vaccines, Illinois health officials are urging them to sign up for a federal online tool to improve the vaccination process.

Melaney Arnold, of the Illinois Department of Public Health, said the V-Safe online tool offered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will help improve the safety of vaccinations.

"The CDC V-Safe Health Checker allows the CDC to collect some information about the side-effects people may be having from the vaccine, and that information the CDC can use that to monitor the safety of the vaccine in near-real time," Arnold said.

Arnold said the tool will monitor people for a year after vaccinations to see how the vaccines are affecting them.

For people who are getting the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines and need a second dose, Arnold said the tool can text reminder notices to smartphones to help ensure people get their second vaccinations in time.
