CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — One man is missing after a boat capsized near 31st Street Beach on Lake Michigan.
More than a dozen people were thrown into the waters of Lake Michigan after the boat they were on flipped at about 7:30 p.m. Friday. Chicago police said it happened just south of the harbor.
Wynter Barginear told CBS 2 that the boat was rented for a family member's birthday party.
She said when they were pulling back in from their trip, the boat started rocking heavily. Shortly after she asked the captain if they needed to distribute their weight across the boat, it flipped and sent her into the water.
“Fell in the water, head went under, popped up, grabbed the boat to save my life,” said Barginear. “If it wasn’t for these two wonderful people who came over to help save me, I could’ve lost my life on just a recreational thing.”
At least three people were taken to the hospital, all in good condition, but one person remains unaccounted for.
