CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - It’s gone viral on social media, and now the couple who were beaten and robbed by an unruly mob Downtown over the weekend are talking.
20-year old Ashley Knutson and her boyfriend Devonte Johnson were viciously attacked after being surrounded by a group of young people on Wabash Avenue. The couple visiting from South Carolina have filed a police report, but detectives have not yet made any arrests.
“I tried to defend myself as best I can. I put my back to the wall. Either fight or become another statistic in Chicago,” Johnson told CBS-2.
Lenora Dennis was the woman who eventually pulled the couple to safety.
“My initial thought was this isn’t going to end if I don’t get them out of here,” said Dennis to CBS-2.
Johnson suffered a black eye, a bruised back and a dislocated shoulder. Knutson and Johnson said they don’t believe the attackers reflect the city as a whole, and that they’d go back downtown but just be more aware of their surroundings.
For now, they’re staying in the suburbs.
