CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — To attract more visitors and businesses to the Magnificent Mile, a plan is being developed to enhance security and experiences along North Michigan Avenue.

Alicia Berg, a former chief planner for the city and now an assistant vice president at the University of Chicago, is among those working on the plan for the Magnificent Mile Association.

She said it would include a special tax for businesses to pay for security cameras, increased police, and other steps to reduce crime and make visitors to the Mag Mile feel more secure.

Other proposals included improving access between North Michigan Avenue and other nearby attractions such as Navy Pier and Oak Street Beach.

Berg said planners were also looking at ways to make it easier for people to linger on sidewalks on North Michigan Avenue that can be crowded and busy, as well as to create zones along the Mag Mile that focus on shopping, dining or entertainment.
